Trauma-informed therapy is an approach that takes into account the impact of trauma on an individual's well-being, including their sense of self-worth. It recognizes that traumatic experiences can significantly affect one's perception of their own value and can lead to feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem.
In trauma-informed therapy, creating a safe and supportive environment is prioritized. Creating a safe space allows individuals to explore and address the impact of trauma on their self-worth without judgment or blame. In this space we will work together to challenge negative self-beliefs and develop a more positive and realistic view of yourself. By reframing narratives and focusing on strengths and resilience, clients can begin to rebuild their self-worth and view themselves in a more compassionate light.
Self-worth is a central aspect of trauma-informed therapy as it seeks to empower individuals to recognize and reclaim their inherent value. Trauma-informed therapy also emphasizes the development of healthy coping skills to manage distressing emotions related to self-worth. Techniques such as mindfulness, grounding exercises, and self-care strategies are integrated to help regulate emotions and cultivate a stronger sense of self-competence.
In trauma-informed therapy you are encouraged to actively participate in the therapeutic process, making decisions collaboratively. Recognizes the profound impact of trauma on an individual's sense of value and aims to facilitate healing, growth, and empowerment. By creating a safe space, validating experiences, reframing narratives, and developing coping skills, individuals can gradually rebuild their self-worth and cultivate a more positive and resilient sense of themselves.
A traumatic event can look different for everyone, depending on one's ability to process it. Frequently survivors of trauma know in their head they are safe but cannot override bodily threat responses, even though the threat has passed. This is due to the defence attempts the body has created to protect itself.
WHAT CAUSES TRAUMA?
Many life events can cause trauma, but it is not the same for everyone. Any life event can trigger trauma in an individual based on their ability to cope with the event. A few examples of traumatic events include:

Child-centered play therapy is an evidence-based approach where children express themselves and work through emotional challenges by engaging in play, fostering self-esteem, emotional regulation, and the ability to cope with difficult emotions.
Toys are children's words and play is their language ~ Garry Landrith
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is an evidence-based mental health intervention for children ages 3–10 with social, emotional, behavioural, or relational disorders. We know children naturally communicate through play; they express their ideas and feelings through creativity and hands-on innovation. We also know from research that the brain develops and connects from the bottom up; because of this, we work with body movement and sensory experiences that allow for a child's natural progression to complex thinking, emotional awareness and mature communication. By utilizing play, a play therapist can help children express, explore and make sense of unresolved confusing feelings and upsetting events. Children can share their life stories, form new connections and build confidence around previous challenges that have been difficult, uncomfortable, worrisome, confusing, or chaotic. CCPT is a gentle but effective therapy that helps children develop healthy relationships, resiliency, emotional literacy and learn to problem solve. Based on person-centred principles, the goal of CCPT is to unleash the child's potential to move toward integration and self-enhancing ways of being.
Children and Trauma
Like adults, children can go through experiences that are stressful or traumatic for them. These experiences can remain “stuck,” and the child may even be unaware of them. Stuck feelings are often what cause emotional and behavioural problems. The child needs to make sense of the stressful or traumatic experience and assimilate it into what they already know about the world. Processing an experience usually involves expressing thoughts and feelings and coming to a new understanding of the incident, leading to behaviour changes. This is similar to what an adult does in counselling by talking with a therapist.
Children are different from adults, and talking about problems using words is often difficult for them due to their brains developing from the bottom up. The way children express themselves is through play. Through play, children will use their imaginations and express themselves symbolically through the toys. This means that experiences that have impacted the child will show up as play behaviours. In play therapy, children can communicate, through toys, all the things they have difficulty saying; or may even be unable to say at all with words.
By playing with toys, children often act out their difficult situations or traumatic events that they have experienced. This process is therapeutic and can bring about a positive change within the child, allowing them a chance to process the event. A child's emotional system can self-heal when certain therapeutic conditions are present. Therapeutic play allows the child's innate self-healing abilities to be activated, supporting the child's growth and development on an emotional and psychological level. In play therapy, children do not have to talk about their problems to feel better.
